Harkiran Kaur

A retired Sonar Operator, and one of the first women to serve on board submarines in Canada’s Navy, I also became the first woman to tie turban in uniform. I also participated as a member of the MARLANT Defence Visible Minority Advisory Group where we advised Command on issues relevant to minorities in the Canadian Armed Forces.

As a convert to the Sikh faith, I attended the Gurdwara locally in Halifax since 2010 and served twice on the management committee as Treasurer and a Member at Large. I have a huge interest in gurmat philosophy and I am a big activist for women’s equality within Sikhi. I also love to play guitar and have been adapting kirtan for this format.

As I retired from the military in 2017, I now spend half the year in Srinagar, Kashmir with my husband and his family. The other half of the year we spend in my home city of Halifax, Canada.
